Therapy for Trauma in New York & New Jersey

If you’ve lived through trauma, you know how deeply it can shape the way you move through the world. When your body has learned to stay on guard, even moments of calm can feel unfamiliar or unsafe. Together, we’ll explore how your system adapted and rebuild a sense of safety.

Trauma can make you feel stuck, overwhelmed, and alone, but finding safety within yourself is possible.

If you’ve experienced trauma, your nervous system may feel like it’s constantly on guard. Even if everything seems “fine” on the outside, you’re secretly waiting for the other shoe to drop. You may struggle with trusting yourself or others, anticipate the worst-case-scenario, or find it challenging to regulate your emotions.

We often think of trauma as a single, major event that dramatically impacts our lives. And while this definition is absolutely true, it’s only part of the story. Trauma can also result from repeatedly feeling neglected, rejected, judged, or shamed to the point that it impacts how you view yourself and others.

Trauma therapy can help you rebuild the confidence, trust, and sense of safety that traumatic experiences erode. The goal is not to “get over” your trauma, it’s to help your nervous system learn that the danger has passed. As your system settles, you’ll gain more access to the parts of you that feel grounded, capable, and in control.

Struggling with trauma can look like:

❋ Experiencing a persistent sense of shame or self-blame

❋ Feeling tense, on edge, or unable to fully relax

❋ Feeling disconnected from your body or emotions

❋ Difficulty trusting others, yourself, or your own instincts

❋ Having strong emotional reactions that feel out of proportion

❋ Chronic, unexplained physical symptoms like headaches or muscle tightness

❋ Feeling like you’re always bracing for something to go wrong

Trauma can take many forms, and we’re here to help you tackle them all.

We utilize a variety of evidence-based therapies to help you find lasting relief from trauma and PTSD.

  • EMDR helps anxiety by addressing the underlying experiences that taught your nervous system to stay on high alert. By reprocessing past memories and patterns, your body can begin to respond to the present with more calm and flexibility. Over time, anxiety feels less reactive and less overwhelming.

  • DBT provides practical tools to help manage anxiety in the moment, such as grounding, emotion regulation, and distress tolerance skills. These skills can be especially helpful when anxiety feels intense or out of control. Over time, they create more stability and confidence in your ability to cope.

  • Psychodynamic therapy looks at how anxiety may be connected to early experiences, relationships, and unconscious patterns. By bringing these dynamics into awareness, you can begin to understand why anxiety shows up and how it’s been shaped over time. This insight creates space for deeper, lasting change.

  • AEDP focuses on creating safety and connection so emotions can be experienced without becoming overwhelming. Through this process, anxiety often softens as your nervous system learns that intense feelings can be tolerated and moved through. The work supports deep emotional healing, not just symptom relief.

  • IFS helps anxiety by exploring the parts of you that feel worried, vigilant, or protective. Rather than trying to get rid of these parts, therapy focuses on understanding what they need and helping them relax their roles. As these parts feel heard and supported, anxiety often decreases naturally.
